I want to start out by saying there is absolutely nothing wrong with eating meat. I eat it, and most of the people I know eat is as well. Some will argue that with the capability to go without it we have a moral obligation to bring less suffering into the world and shouldn’t eat it at all. I respect that opinion, but personally believe that eating meat is a natural part of life and because of that will most likely always eat it. However, while I do not think it is wrong to eat meat, I do feel that if you do, you should go hunting at least once in your life.

I feel this way because in today’s society, where everything is in excess and nice and packaged in plastic wrapped boxes, it can be easy to loose sight of where all that food comes from. We know it comes from an animal, but we have distanced ourselves from what that really means. We don’t like to think about how that saran wrapped slab we’re planning to cook later was actually a living being, despite the fact that it was bred and raised to be eaten it still feels, eats, and loves, and we killed it. I know it’s not a pleasant thought, but I think we owe it to that animal to think about it. That animal deserves our respect, and we are not above it simply because we are smarter.

It can be hard to have that mentality when our whole lives are spent only in the checkout line. Yes, we can say we know that the animal was alive and we can even respect that it was killed and packaged for our convince. However, I feel that honestly unless you go hunting at least once in your life, it’s a hollow understanding, and it’s a hollow respect. It may not be a popular opinion, but I feel that if you don’t have the stomach to kill the animal yourself, or at the very least be there with someone when they do, how can you have the stomach to eat it afterwards? How can you say you really respect that animal?

Some people straight up just don’t care. They admit they don’t respect the animal and think their only reason for existing is to be bred an eaten. If you are one of those people obviously this wasn’t for you, and also you’re a piece of shit. For everyone else do yourself the favor and go hunting, just once. If you can’t go hunting then ask to be there on a farm when they kill a cow, or go kill yourself a chicken (the point being not having hunting gear isn’t an excuse). You don’t have to like it, hell, I hated it and will probably never go again. But now when I go to the market to pick up a steak or some chicken, I definitely appreciate where that meat came from a whole lot more. It’s just something you have to experience for yourself and out of respect for the animals we eat.
